Fly Screen Mesh Replacement in Dubai

A fly screen is two parts: a frame and the mesh held inside it. The mesh sits in a channel around the inside edge of the frame, pinned in place by a thin rubber cord called a spline that is pressed into the channel on top of the mesh. To re-mesh, we pull out the old spline, lift away the worn mesh, lay fresh mesh over the frame, and roll a new spline into the channel to lock it in, trimming the excess. The skill is in the tension: pulled evenly so the finished mesh is flat and tight, not slack and not so tight it bows the frame.

This is why fresh mesh brings a tired screen fully back to life. A screen with a hole in it holds nothing back, and the mosquitoes it lets through can spread illness, the sort the World Health Organization follows in its work on vector-borne disease and on dengue. A clean re-mesh restores that barrier for a small slice of the price of a new screen.

Re-meshing is your chance to put in better mesh than the screen had before, and the best choice depends on your home. Standard fibreglass mesh is the all-rounder: flexible, easy to see through and fine enough for the usual insects. If you have a cat or a dog, a pet-resistant mesh is far thicker and tougher, so paws and claws do not punch through it the way they do thin netting. If your trouble is the very small biters, dust or pollen, a finer weave shuts more of it out.

Colour matters too. Grey and charcoal are the easiest to see through from inside, and a darker charcoal also gives a touch more privacy from outside in daylight. For a door that gets heavy use or a large screen, a heavier polyester mesh takes more knocks than fibreglass. The deciding factor is the frame. If it is straight, solid and runs as it should, re-meshing is nearly always the right call: you keep the frame, the rollers and the fittings, and pay only for fresh mesh and the work, which lands at a fraction of a new screen. A torn or perished mesh in a good frame is the textbook case for a re-mesh.

A new screen earns its place when the frame itself has gone, badly bent, eaten by corrosion or cracked, or when an ageing screen has several things failing together. Fresh mesh in a failing frame is money down the drain. Every style of screen holds its mesh a little differently, and each is re-meshed to suit. A fixed window or door panel is the simplest: out with the old spline and mesh, in with the new. A sliding screen is re-meshed the same way, and we check the wheels and track while it is out so it glides cleanly afterwards. These are almost always done on-site in a few minutes each.

Retractable and roller screens take a little more care, because the mesh runs onto a spring-loaded barrel. We renew the mesh and reset the spring tension so it rolls out and back smoothly. A pleated screen has the mesh folded over its cords, so re-meshing it also means checking and re-stringing those folds. Magnetic curtains are the easiest of all, simply re-hung with fresh mesh. Mesh ages faster here than in a milder climate, and the sun is the main reason. Strong, constant UV slowly breaks down the fibres until cheap or uncoated mesh turns dry and brittle, and at that point it cracks and tears at the lightest touch. A screen that takes the full afternoon sun will always need re-meshing sooner than one in the shade. Wind-blown sand adds to it, scouring the surface over time, and heat makes thin mesh sag.

The way to get more years out of a re-mesh is to use better mesh. A good coated fibreglass or a heavier polyester stands up to UV far longer than the thin netting often fitted to save money, so it stays flexible and strong for years rather than going brittle in a couple of seasons. It is the main thing we steer people toward at a re-mesh, because it is the difference between doing this once and doing it again soon.

Fresh mesh asks for very little to keep it in good shape. Every so often, brush or vacuum it to clear the dust and sand that settle in the weave, and wipe it over with a sponge and mild soapy water if it needs more than that. Keeping it clean keeps the holes open so air still moves through and the mesh does not clog. On a sliding or roller screen, a quick brush of the track now and then stops grit building up and straining the mesh.

Beyond cleaning, the kindest thing is to handle the screen gently: slide it rather than shove it, and keep pets from leaning on it where you can. If a small nick does appear, deal with it before it spreads into a tear that needs the whole panel re-meshed again. Looked after, a re-mesh gives years of clear, bug-free windows before it needs doing again.
