Far more than people assume. The two parts of a screen that fail are the mesh and the moving bits, and both can usually be fixed without a new screen. Torn, sagging or sun-perished mesh is sorted by re-meshing, which puts fresh netting into the frame you already have. Faulty rollers, springs, magnets, tracks and runners are repaired or swapped for new parts. Even a knocked frame can often be straightened or have its worst section replaced.

This matters more than it sounds, because a screen with a hole in it is no screen at all. A single tear is an open invitation to mosquitoes, and the illnesses they spread are tracked by the World Health Organization, from vector-borne disease in general to dengue in particular. Fixing the screen quickly puts the barrier back in place for a fraction of what a replacement costs.

Re-meshing is the most common repair we do, and the one that saves the most money. The frame of a screen is the lasting part; it is the mesh that tears, stretches or goes brittle in the sun. A re-mesh strips the old netting out of the frame and tensions fresh mesh back in, so you keep the frame and the fittings and only pay for new material and the work.

It is quick, usually done on-site, and a fraction of the cost of a new screen. We fit the same quality fibreglass or polyester mesh in grey or charcoal that goes on our new screens, so a re-meshed screen is as good as it was the day it went up. Roller and retractable screens have a spring-loaded mechanism in the cassette, and that is where most of their faults sit. A screen that will not pull out, will not roll back in, or shoots shut too hard usually has a tired or broken spring or a worn brake. We open the cassette, repair or replace the parts inside, and reset the tension so it draws out and rolls back smoothly.

The mesh on these screens can also tear where it meets the runners, and the side channels can clog with dust so the screen drags. We re-mesh the panel and clean and adjust the channels as part of the repair. Caught early, a sticky roller is a simple fix; left alone, a jammed mechanism can damage the mesh and the cassette, so it is worth booking in sooner rather than later.

A magnetic door screen fails in a few familiar ways: the magnets lose their grip and the panels gape in the middle, the mesh tears down a seam, or the top fixing comes loose and the curtain droops. We replace the magnetic strips, re-hang the curtain or re-mesh the panel, so it parts as you walk through and snaps shut behind you the way it should.

Pleated screens work on thin cords that run through the folds to keep them even. When a cord frays or snaps, the screen stops pulling evenly or will not stack neatly to one side. We re-string the cords and check the folds and the bottom track, so the screen draws across and gathers cleanly again. Both jobs are usually done on-site once we have the right parts with us.

A sliding or roller screen that has come off its track or sticks halfway is one of the jobs we see most. Often the screen has simply jumped the channel and needs refitting, with the track cleaned out and adjusted so it runs true. Sand and grit build up in the bottom track in this climate, and that alone can make a screen drag or stick.

Where the rollers, wheels or guides are worn or bent, we replace them so the screen glides properly rather than fighting you every time. It is worth dealing with quickly, because a screen forced along a bad track tends to tear its mesh or twist its frame, turning a small refit into a bigger repair. Most track and roller jobs are finished on the same visit.

Mesh fails for a few reasons here. Years of strong sun make cheap or uncoated netting go brittle until it cracks and tears at a touch. Pets are a big one, a cat or dog pushing at a screen will eventually hole it. And forcing a screen that is stuck on its track puts strain on the mesh until it rips along an edge. Knowing the cause helps, because the fix and the prevention go together.

To keep a screen out of the repair list, brush or vacuum the mesh now and then so it does not load up with dust, keep the bottom track clear of sand so the screen runs freely, and deal with a small tear before it spreads. When you do re-mesh, choosing a good coated fibreglass or polyester mesh over thin netting means it lasts far longer in the heat. A little care buys a screen years of trouble-free use.

The rule of thumb is simple. If the frame and the mechanism are still sound and only the mesh or a single part has failed, a repair is almost always the right call, and it costs a fraction of a new screen. A re-mesh, a new spring or a fresh set of magnets brings the screen back to full working order for far less than replacing the lot.

A new screen makes more sense when the frame is badly bent or corroded, when the screen is very old and several things are going at once, or when the same screen keeps failing despite repairs. From there we arrange a visit to assess it properly, agree the price with you, and in most cases fix it the same day. Nothing is charged for the assessment and nothing is done until you have said yes to the price.
