Fly Screens in Sharjah

Sharjah has water threaded right through it. Khalid Lagoon and the Al Majaz waterfront cut into the heart of the city, the Al Khan lagoon sits beside Maryam Island, and Al Mamzar reaches in from the coast. Still water like this, paired with the warm and humid Gulf air, is exactly what mosquitoes need to breed, so the apartment towers and townhouses near the water see plenty of them, especially after dark. Away from the lagoons, the dense city and the gardens of the newer villa communities bring their own flies and insects.

This is about more than comfort, though. The mosquitoes bred in that water carry illnesses the World Health Organization follows closely, the broad heading of vector-borne disease and dengue within it. Fit a screen and the opening can stay wide for the lagoon breeze while the mosquitoes, flies and the rest are turned away at the mesh, which is the reason screens are so common in Sharjah.

Apartments dominate Sharjah, and most of our flat work lands in the towers of Al Qasimia, Al Khan, Al Taawun, Al Majaz and Al Nahda. The opening that counts is nearly always the balcony door, backed by windows in the bedrooms and living room. A balcony door is best served by a magnetic curtain, an inexpensive option that pulls itself shut as you pass, while a broad sliding door takes a pleated screen. The bedroom windows need no more than a fixed or sliding panel.

A great many of these flats are rented, and that is exactly where tape earns its place: no holes go into the walls or frames, so your deposit stays safe and the screen either travels with you or lifts away cleanly. Towers right by the lagoons draw the heaviest mosquito traffic, so those balconies and bedrooms tend to top the list. Both choices are set out on our magnetic and pleated pages.

Sharjah's newer villa estates, Aljada, Hoshi, Al Zahia, Barashi, Nasma Residences and Tilal City, run to broad windows, sliding doors out to a garden, and a front door that barely rests. A wide sliding door is happiest with a retractable or sliding screen, since either slips aside when idle and leaves the doorway clear. The front door does well with a retractable or a hinged screen, easy for a family in and out all day.

Everything hangs on the mesh, and the default is a fine fibreglass weave in grey or charcoal. You see out of it easily, air passes straight through, and it turns back the everyday mosquitoes and flies. Both shades leave the view clear, with charcoal lending a touch more daytime privacy from the street. For the bulk of Sharjah homes, by the lagoons or well inland, this standard mesh is plenty.

Two upgrades deserve a mention. Share the house with a cat or dog and a sturdier pet-resistant mesh takes the clawing far better. Battle very small biters or fine dust and a tighter weave shuts more of it out. Step one is the free measurement. We agree a slot, make the short hop from Deira, and size up each opening you want screened down to the millimetre, since a made-to-measure screen only seals if it matches the frame precisely. While there we settle which type suits each window and door, and price the whole job there and then, nothing to pay and nothing to sign up to.

After that the screens are made to those sizes and we come back to fit, generally inside four to eight working days. Everything goes on with strong double-sided tape, so no drilling and no mess, and an ordinary screen is up in minutes. A bigger villa naturally claims more of the fitting day. Almost every screen we put up is held by strong double-sided tape, not screws. No holes are bored into your walls, aluminium or uPVC, and once a screen comes off there is nothing left to show for it. The tape is purpose-made and stands firm through Sharjah's heat and humidity, keeping a screen exactly where it was placed.

That is a genuine plus here, where so much of the housing is rented flats in Al Nahda, Al Taawun and Al Qasimia. Drilling can eat into a deposit and is frequently banned outright, so a taped screen leaves landlord and tenant content alike. A villa gains just as much, its good frames untouched, and should you move on, the screen peels away without a trace.

New screens are only half of what we do; we keep them running afterwards as well.
